Rugby World Cup organisers are confident of strong sales when tickets go on the market to the general public for the first time tomorrow in New Zealand.

More than 50,000 fans from over 100 countries have pre-registered to apply for venue and team pool packs for next year’s tournament in New Zealand.

This includes 20,000 overseas fans across the world, living in countries such as Barbados, Botswana, China, Colombia, Egypt, Estonia, Iceland, Mongolia, Mauritius, Norway, Puerto Rico and Qatar.

About 30,000 New Zealand fans have also pre-registered.

The bulk of fans outside New Zealand come from the UK, Australia, Ireland, France, USA, South Africa and Canada.

Applications open online at www.rugbyworldcup.com/tickets and close on Friday May 21.

Pre-registration is not necessary, but was encouraged to save fans time during the application process.

“This is a fantastic response and shows how popular Rugby World Cup has become around the world,” Martin Snedden, CEO for tournament organiser, Rugby New Zealand 2011, said.

“The rest of the world knows that RWC 2011 is going to be a special event so I urge Kiwi fans to take advantage of this first phase of ticketing.”

The strong initial interest from global fans underlines news last week that 85,000 tickets have been sold already through official travel packages. England has reported sales nearly 40 percent up on those over the same period for Rugby World Cup 2007 in France.

Nearly 700,000 page views have also been registered on the ticket information section of the tournament’s official website as fans look to digest details ahead of the worldwide application process going live.

To mark the ticket sales kicking off, the Webb Ellis Cup will be on public display in the foyer of Wellington Railway Station tomorrow morning.
