PES 2010 Review

Any critical assessor of recent incarnations of Pro Evolution Soccer would not have been entirely happy with what Konami delivered, but in PES2010 they have once again returned to what makes their game beautiful.

The key to the much-improved game is a lessening of the arcade-like excesses with a return to its simulation-style familiarity.

In other words, the element of unpredictability will see matches stay alive until the final whistle – no sitting on a lead here. Further to that, and in a carbon-copy of real life (always important in sports games), don’t be surprised to see your defenders switching off, the opposition ‘keeper spilling shots and strikers popping up from nowhere to score the decider.

To counterbalance the familiar feel, PES2010 also introduces a net-full of new features.

Easily the most revolutionary is 360° player movement which, with the massive leap player likeness has taken on the PES2009 edition, just takes the real-life feel to another level.

The gameplay aspects have also been enhanced.

Firstly, passing feels more natural than the previous ‘on a waterlogged field’ and set-pieces are less random.

Also upgraded is the ever-popular ‘Master League’ which enables you to build your team from scratch and with the overdue addition of some Champions and Europa League licences gives you greater options.

All in all, PES2010 is once again a superb game which has all the hallmarks needed to entice buyers: it is a significant improvement on its predecessor and throws up exciting matches.
