Hunter Wins, Armstrong Lurks
Robbie Hunter has blasted to his second win in a row at the Tour of Murcia, blitzing the field, including Lance Armstrong.
Hunter, South Africa’s best cyclist, has shifted teams from Barloworld to Garmin-Transitions and he opened up his season in style with back-to-back sprint wins.
Armstrong’s South African teammate Daryl Impey was credited with the same finishing time on the first two days of the five-day race, which puts two South Africans into the top 10 of the General Classification.
RadioShack team leader Armstrong will be keeping his powder dry for Saturday’s fast and furious 22km time trial where he’ll be testing his condition against major Tour de France rivals Bradley Wiggins and Denis Menchov.
Immediately after the race finish on Sunday, Armstrong and Impey will be jetting back to South Africa for the three-day Discovery Lance for Life Tour which, in conjunction with the JAG Foundation, hopes to raise millions of rands for the upliftment of communities through sports-related programmes.
And, of course, next weekend, the biggest cyclist in the world (Armstrong) will ride the biggest race in the world (the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour).
